CBD Could be Subject to Further Research for IBS Therapy

Cannabis may be an effective treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), responsible for binding cannabidiol (CBD) and producing many of its known effects, can relieve many symptoms if IBS after activation by an “agonist” or binding partner. In rat models mimicking IBS, the presence of a CB2 receptor agonist decreased colonic hypermotility, a debilitating symptom of IBS. As CBD is an agonist of CB2, therapeutic innovations for IBS using cannabis may be possible.
